OUR STORIES
Past projects
The Care Foundation works closely with health sector partners to identify and fund projects that are beyond the scope of Government funding, and which will have the greatest impact on healthcare in our region.
We have funded innovative new equipment and technology, patient care initiatives, community health lectures, and training scholarships for hospital and allied health staff.
With some of our projects we have partnered with other charities and organisations, including Rotary, Lions, Marlborough Equipment Trust and Mitre 10 Mega.
Here are some of our stories, all of which have been made possible through generous donations.
Public Health Lecture Series
The Care Foundation has provided funding for a series of community health lectures seeking to educate, inform and challenge the Nelson Marlborough public on certain health matters.
Sensory Equipment: Wairau & Nelson
As the saying goes “alone we do a little, together we can do so much” and The Care Foundation has certainly seen the benefit of working together with other community groups.
Ipu (Bowls)
We responded to a request from our medical staff wanting to ensure they could, in a culturally safe manner, provide the necessary vessels for the proper care of tūpāpaku, in our Nelson and Wairau Hospitals sites.
Manu Ora: Specialist Equipment
Manu Ora is a charitable organisation based in Blenheim providing a unique service within a Kaupapa Māori model.
Nelson Child Development Services Therapy Playground
The Care Foundation was keen to help this vision come to life and provided funding, with help from local law firm Duncan Cotterill, for the specialised play equipment for the area.
Live Life Disability Support Services: Virtual Reality Equipment
For many disabled people, the nature of their disabilities excludes them from participating in day-to day activities which many of us take for granted.
Suicide Bereavement Support: WAVES Programme
Suicide is a whole of society issue. The death of a loved one to suicide is life-altering and traumatic for those left behind.
Education Scholarships
Since 2019 The Care Foundation has provided the funding for Career Development Scholarships for healthcare workers in the Top of the South.
The Nelson Tasman Hospice: Specialist Equipment
The Care Foundation was able to support the great work the Hospice does in the community by funding the purchase of a state-of-the-art therapeutic Airmattress together with a specialist bed with electronic handsets to lower, rise and fold the bed.
Wairau Children’s Respite Home Playground
Earlier this year a dawn blessing marked the opening of the brand-new Wairau Children’s Respite Home. This is a purpose-built house which has been designed to allow for up to six families with children who have disabilities and complex needs to access respite care for their tamariki at any given time.
Christmas Cheer
For many disabled people, the nature of their disabilities excludes them from participating in day-to day activities which many of us take for granted.
Haemodialysis Unit Equipment
At the end of 2022 a new purpose-built Haemodialysis Unit opened at Nelson Hospital servicing patients in the Top of the South.
Motueka District Nurses: Specialist Equipment
Motueka District Nurses provide a range of services to the wider Motueka community which are beyond the scope of general practice but do not require hospital admission.
AT&R Unit : Outdoor Furniture & Bedside Lamps
In partnership with Mitre 10 Nelson, The Care Foundation was able to replace the Unit’s old outdoor furniture, which was no longer fit for purpose, with sturdy new tables and chairs.
Support for Impoverished Elderly
To support the BLC initiative, The Care Foundation provided a grant towards a discretionary fund to help purchase medical equipment, household basics, transport to and payment for health appointments.
