Wairau Children’s Respite Home Playground

Earlier this year a dawn blessing marked the opening of the brand-new Wairau Children’s Respite Home.

This is a purpose-built house which has been designed to allow for up to six families with children who have disabilities and complex needs to access respite care for their tamariki at any given time. The Care Foundation in partnership with Marlborough Equipment Trust provided funding for the accessible and safe playground at the Respite Home. Government funding had only allowed for a simple grassed finish and basic play equipment, however due to the nature of the tamariki staying at the Home it was everyone’s wish to provide them with a truly accessible space that enriches their experience.

As accessible play equipment is expensive, the playground was designed to complement other play equipment available in the community rather than replicate it. The playground features a wheelchair accessible trampoline, a swing set with interchangeable seats specific to the needs of those staying, sandbox, slide, play table and a range of outdoor games.

Jane Kinsey, Te Whatu Ora General Manager Mental Health and Live Life Disability Support, said “As children grow and develop, they need to engage in experiences that stimulate their senses. Too often children with complex needs are less able to access such play equipment and experiences.”

“We hope an enriching playground will improve their stay and help encourage children to return to the care home when they are next scheduled to visit, making the transition easier for everyone,” she said.
